MON COMBAT CONTRE LE CANCER

Au printemps de 2010 on m’a découvertune forme très agressive de cancer de la prostate. C’est alors que j’ai entrepris un programme d’artthérapie afin de combattre cette maladie.
D’abord, j’ai dû recevoir de nombreux traitements de radio-thérapie en plus de l’hormonothérapie. Ensuite, j’ai eu la chance d’avoir une excellente équipe en radio-oncologie à l’hôpital Notre-Dame. Avant d’apprendre que j’avais la cancer je me préparais à exposer au Centre d’art du Palais de Justice de Kamouraska. La directrice du Centre m’avait alors demandé de faire quelques séances de démonstration devant public. En apprenant la mauvaise nouvelle j’ai décidé de me donner un plus granddéfi et de me prouver à moi-même qu’en dépit du cancer, je pouvais créer une oeuvre majeure et ainsi témoigner à Kamouraska ma reconnaissance de m’avoir inspiré pendant tant d’années. Il en est sortie une sculpture monumentale intitulée ``Kamouraska mon amour``, après 150 heures de travail. L’oeuvre sera dévoilée lors d’une cérémonie spéciale le 3 juillet prochain, à Kamouraska. Durant mes traitements de radio-thérapie j’ai vu sur l’écran ordinateur une image latérale de l’os de ma hanche et j’aiété impressionné par son mouvement et sa transparence. J’ai décidé à ce moment -là qu’une fois mes traitements terminés j’en ferais une sculpture en guise de thérapie personnelle pour combattre mon cancer. Je me suis procuré un bloc d’albâtre italien et avec la radiographie comme guide, j’ai commencé monoeuvre.Je l’ai intilulée ``Combattant``.L’une desfaces est assez fidèle àl’image vue sur l’écran. L’autre est sortie de mon imaginaire et on y voit une forme de figue qui représente ma prostate… maisexempte de toute forme d’impureté. Le courage, la détermination et l’optimisme couplés à d’excellents soins médicaux aident à combattre le cancer. *****************************************************
Combatting Cancer My Way

Since being diagnosed with a very aggressive form of prostate cancer in the Spring of 2010 I embarked on a program of art therapy to help me battle this disease. My treatments involved immediate hormonal therapy, scheduled to last two to three years, and 38 sessions of radio-therapy. I am lucky to have excellent professional care from the radio-oncology team at Notre Dame hospital. Before I learned of my cancer I was preparing for an exhibition at the Palais de Justice arts centre in Kamouraska and was asked by the Centre’s Director, Ève Simard to demonstrate sculpting for the general public on two weekends during the exhibition. However, on getting the bad news I decided to give myself a greater challenge to prove to myself that despite the cancer, I was able to create a major work and, at the same time, give something back to the Kamouraska region that had inspired me over the years. Thus the monumental sculpture ``Kamouraska mon amour`` was conceived and finished after 150 hours of work, on July 31st 2010. The unveiling ceremony will be on July 3rd 2011. During my radio-therapy treatments I saw the lateral image of my hip bones on the computer screen and was impressed by its movement and translucence. I decided there and then that once the treatment was over I would begin a sculpture as a personal form of therapy to combat the cancer. I purchased a block of Italian translucent alabaster and, using the radiography image as a guide, I set to work. The result is the sculpture that I call ``Combattant``. One side is pretty much representational of the image I saw on the screen. The other side was created by my imagination and includes a fig shaped image which represents my prostate (taken from an echogram image)…now free of all impurities. With courage, determination and optimism, coupled with excellent medical care, cancer can be beaten.

Vernissage vendredi 10 septembre, 19h 30 Par le thème choisi le ASPM souligne la démarche artistique de l'invitée d'honneur Marie Hélène Allain et aussi le Prix Rumsey que j'ai gagné à Paris en 2008 pour ma sculpture ``Percer le mur du silence``
The work was finished after about two weeks of relatively intense activity. The work is a monument to the stone industry of Portland - its stone workers and their families - eleven generations of them. The stone was taken from Independent Quarry. The stone is from the Patch Reef, a stone that is no longer quarried in Independent quarry, and is full of shells and sculptural challenges. In the quarry, a number of the textures that are on the sculpture can be seen as one walks and observes. The bottom left texture symbolizes the gulleys and joints in the Portland stone that the quarrymen used to "win" the stone by hand in times past. The part to the left of the stylised human figure is a recognition of generations of quarrymen and masons who have left their marks on the stone, and acknowledges their immense contribution to the stone industry of Portland through their labour. The upper right relates to ripple marks that can be seen throughout the quarry environment. One can see how the magnificent sweep of Chesil Beach influenced the design. The rear of the sculpture is a mirror image of the front and has received a minimum of intervention on the weathered parts. The raised parts in the front become recessed in the rear, and vice versa. Circular forms on the sculpture make reference to the planetary system in which we occupy a miniscule part. The stylized human figure is seen to tread lightly on the landscape, offering the hope that as but one species on the planet, we will minimize our ecological footprints in the future.

On December 13th I was awarded the prestigious Rumsey Prize by the jury of the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts for my sculpture, Percer le Mur du Silence, at the International Salon 2008 listed below.
