Kamouraska mon amour

Cette sculpture est un hommage à Kamouraska, à ses paysages et aux gens qui y habitent.

Mon premier contact avec l'estuaire du St-Laurent remonte à septembre 1966 alors que je traversais l'Atlantique pour immigrer  au Canada.  Après cinq jours en mer je fus soudain seduit par la splendeur automnale des collines entourant les petits villages de la côte. Quelques 30 ans plus tard on m'a fait découvrir Kamouraska.  Je suis tombé immédiatement sous le charme de ce village, de ses gens et de la variété des textures du paysage.

Faire don de  Kamouraska mon amour à la municipalité est ma façon de témoigner ma reconnaissance à cette région qui m'a si fortement inspiré dans ma création.  C'est aussi ma façon de remercier les gens d'ici pour leur accueil chaleureux et leur aide inconditionnelle durant l'exposition Mystère et forces de la nature  tenue du 18 juin au 1er août 2010

Kamouraska mon amour a été sculptée sur place près de l'Ancien Palais de Justice et a nécessité 150 heures de travail. Elle fut achevée et signée le 31 juillet 2010, jour significatif des 30 ans de mon fils unique. La pierre est un calcaire provenant de St-Marc-des-Carrières, Portneuf, et la base est une pierre des champs trouvée ici même à Kamouraska. Cette oeuvre organique est le fruit des nombreuses observations de textures et de formes naturelles de la région du Kamouraska qui ont influencé fortement mon approche en sculpture. Ce qui m'intéresse particulièrement au plan esthétique et artistique c'est l'effet produit par la juxtaposition de la pierre à l'état brut avec sa texture naturelle,ses imperfections, ses fractures qui contraste avec les zones plus polies, plus texturées que je crée. Ainsi, l'outil entre les mains du sculpteur joue, pourrait-on dire, le même rôle que la nature elle-même: il polit, sable, texture ou laisse simplement à l'état brut.

Cette sculpture illustre la splendeur du St-Laurent et de ses îles, les rides laissées sur la grève à marée basse, les diverses strates texturées qui définissent la côte et les champs cultivés coupés par le système des aboiteaux. La présence humaine dans le paysage kamouraskois est  suggérée par cette large figure polie qui pose sur la terre un pied léger et joyeux, prenant plaisir de sa beauté et respectant sa fragilité. Enfin, la partie trouée représente l'oeil de l'artiste qui fait corps avec son oeuvre, son inspiration.

Kamouraska mon amour

This sculpture celebrates Kamouraska, its landscape and its people.

My first contact with the Saint Lawrence estuary was in late September 1966. After five days crossing the Atlantic Ocean the image of small villages surrounded by hills in their autumnal glory captivated my imagination. Some thirty years later I had my first introduction to Kamouraska and immediately fell in love with its charming location, its people, and the textures in its varied landscape.

Donating Kamouraska mon amour to the Municipality is my way of giving back something of myself in recognition of the inspiration that the region has offered to my creative forces. It also my way of thanking the people for their warm welcome and assistance during the exhibition, Mystère et Forces de la Nature.

 Kamouraska mon amour was completed after 150 hours of labour on July 31^st, significantly, the 30^th birthday of my only son.  Sculpted from Saint-Marc limestone it is mounted on a field stone found in the Kamouraska landscape. This organic work incorporates some of the observations of texture and natural forms from the region that have had a powerful influence on my approach to sculpture. What interests me esthetically and artistically are the effects achieved by allowing the raw stone with its natural texture, imperfections and fractured surfaces, to interplay with the polished areas and textures that I create. The tools in the hand of the sculptor thus become a metaphor for Nature’s evolutionary and transformational forces which polish, erode, texture, or leave in a natural state.

The sculpture makes reference to the mighty Saint Lawrence and its islands, the ripple marks in the sea bottom exposed at low tide, the multi textured strata that line the shore, and the adjoining fields reclaimed by the aboiteaux drainage system. The eye of the artist represents the spirit that releases his creative forces. Human interaction with the Kamouraska landscape is suggested by the large polished figure that, with a joyous movement steps ever so lightly on the earth, taking pleasure in its beauty, yet respecting the environment.
